This Chiropractor Near Makati, Manila Taught Me 5 Things About My Back and Health

Visiting a Chiropractor Across the Makati CBD Area

I accompanied my wife one Saturday when she visited this chiropractic clinic in Taguig, near Makati City, Metro Manila. I was very eager to join her because in the many years that we've been together, most of the time, she would wake up the moment I got up for work at around 5:30 in the morning. Very seldom would she be able to get back to sleep after I leave for the office.

The two nights after her chiropractic session with Dr. George Cromack together with other friends one Wednesday, she slept so soundly, like a baby and slept even after I left for work. This was not usual because I would always encourage her to go back to sleep after I say goodbye in the morning. Sometimes, when I text with her during the day, I would also encourage her to take time for a nap after lunch with our son. But, because of her action-oriented personality and inclination, she usually would not feel the need to rest unless she has finished the many things she juggles - online tasks, homeschooling, and keeping the home. She is a very productive lady that's why I call her my Proverbs 31 woman.

So, last Saturday, I went to visit Dr. Cromack's Manila Neck and Back Center located in Bonifacio Global City, right across Makati CBD and got to experience for myself the advantages of having sessions with a very experienced chiropractor. Dr. George Cromack has 33 years of experience in chiropractic medicine.

Dr. Cromack's chiropractic expertise taught me five things about my back and my overall health.

1. The muscles on either sides of the spine should be balanced.

One of the first things that Dr. Cromack did was scan my back using the Static EMG Scanner.

It is a device used to detect or read electrical activity (action potential) in order to measure paraspinal tension. According to an article on Static and Dynamic Surface Electromyography(sEMG),

The electric current pattern is a critical component in how your body functions. The muscles on either side of your spine should be balanced: if they are not working equally well, the body is forced to compensate, which takes energy. This imbalance can monitored by sEMG technology. Alterations in electrical activity in the paraspinal muscles can shed light on the muscular changes linked to vertebral subluxations. As such, chiropractors can use sEMG to establish a baseline for paraspinal electrical activity.

So, according to the sEMG scan, the upper and lower portions of my back show huge amounts of variation in surface electricity from normal and have subluxations (partial dislocation).

2. Spinal decay or subluxation degeneration naturally happens with age.

I learned that there are 3 phases to this and at age 40 (I just celebrated my birthday early this month), I am at Phase 1.

3. Proper diet is necessary to support good bone health

One particular area of diet is milk intake. I have always thought that drinking milk strengthens the bones. But according to a Harvard study,

...high calcium intake doesn’t actually appear to lower a person’s risk for osteoporosis. For example, in the large Harvard studies of male health professionals and female nurses, individuals who drank one glass of milk (or less) per week were at no greater risk of breaking a hip or forearm than were those who drank two or more glasses per week.

The study also said that milk is actually only one of many sources of calcium—dark leafy green vegetables and some types of legumes are among the other sources—and there are some important reasons why milk may not be the best source for everyone, like lactose intolerance, milk having high saturated fats increasing the risk factor for heart disease, the possible increased risk of ovarian cancer, and the probable increased risk of prostate cancer.

4. Completing the recommended number of sessions with the chiropractor is necessary

Especially for people with serious back and neck problems, sticking it out is really important before you see significant results. Based on Dr. Cromack's  experience, many patients of chiropractors tend to start out a few sessions and give up when they don't see instant results. But those who finished the recommended number of sessions experienced breakthrough and were glad they stuck it out.

5. "Feeling healthy" doesn't mean you don't need to see a chiropractor

This is actually how I view myself - healthy. I believe I have strong bones and since I am quite athletic, I think I'm okay. But when I sat on the chiropractic bed and Dr. Cromack started checking my neck flexibility, I realized the range of motion of my neck was quite reduced.

When Dr. Cromack checked me, I also learned that my left leg was slightly shorter than my right leg, and this was due to the problem in my lower back which I thought I didn't have. My wife inspected my legs and confirmed this. I was glad this got corrected right away during my first session with this chiropractor near Makati City.
