Holiday Shopping with Groupon

J.
Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.

With the holidays fast approaching, everyone seems to be ever so busy ticking off each and every item on their Christmas shopping list. I know I am! If you are like our family, we rather would really do away with the mall crowd. It has, for us, become so tiring to go about the mall rush especially at this time of the year. And please don't let me get started with the traffic.

5 Things Our Family Love About Hyatt City of Dreams

J.

There are so many things to love about Hyatt City of Dreams Manila.

One of which is its being within the metropolis, which translates to accessibility if you happen to have a family that has a crazy schedule like we do.

Here are 5 reasons why we love Hyatt City of Dreams Manila:

1. Distance

We love going on staycations and quick getaways whenever we get the chance but a distant destination is not always feasible for us, even if we want to fly or do long drives whenever. This is why finding accommodations in Manila through online booking sites like Traveloka is almost always what we doHyatt City of Dreams Manila is one of our favorite quick vacation destinations that we look forward to going in Metro Manila.

And because Hyatt City of Dreams Manila is so close to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, three kilometeres away, to be exact, travelers can check-in here to make sure they catch their flight without having hassle themselves with the metrowide traffic, Manila is infamous for.

2. Posh Accommodation

Hyatt City of Dreams is a 5-star hotel, that has a total of 362 full-featured rooms. Rooms range from 36 to 86 sqm with floor to ceiling windows furnished in relaxing and warm shades of mustard, paprika and chocolate.

Our Superior Room's toilet and bath was the bomb! Above is the panoramic photo I took of our posh t&b. It was huge and we totally loved it. One of our fun anecdotes belong to this bath as we found out that our son took a bath in the tub instead of the shower. He so got used to bathing in our bath tub at home that it didn't occur to him that it would be easier for him to bathe in the shower. Haha!

I totally loved the lighted vanity mirror! I swore I was going to get one when I get home. Haha!

Our room had a 42-inch LED HDTV with an interactive interface, safe that can accommodate a laptop and the no less than 300-count linen and sink-into-me pillow. If we had a week to stay in Hyatt CDO, I would have stayed in bed all day!

3. Amenities

A photo posted by jenaspacio (@jenaspacio) on

Unless we are staycationing in a cooler place like Tagaytay or Baguio, or overseas, our family will always book in a place with a pool. There's nothing like having fun while having a full body workout and we all can make use of cooling off from the scorching heat we are offered almost the whole year in the tropics.

If you happen to no fancy swimming, the Fitness Center at the Level 1 is fully equipped with treadmills, weights, steppers and stationary bikes. And it's open 24 hours. We had the Fitness Center all to ourselves during our visit.

4. DreamPlay

DreamPlay is the world's first family entertainment center from Hollywood Studio DreamWorks Animation, that features education-based, interactive entertainment with its idea of kids learning best through play.

It occupies over 2,400 sqm and features DreamWorks' beloved characters integrated in the games and activity offerings, catering to children from 6 to 12 years old. I wasn't anywhere close to that age, but I sure did love my time within the theme park.

Our son with Kung Fu Panda

5. The Cafe

Located at the left of the lobby is The Cafe, where vibrant live cooking and buffet stations await guests who are in for the feast of their lifetime.

Although ala carte is available, I highly recommend that you avail of the buffet service hours where live culinary theatre is performed by experienced chefs.

The range of food offerings at The Cafe:

  • Italian: pasta, pizza and Italian favorites
  • The Grill and Griddle: carvery, grill, teppan griddle, satay, kebab, yakitori
  • The Deli: sushi, sashimi, charcuteries, pates and cheeses, salads, bread varieties and terrines, chilled seafood.
  • The Asian: dimsum, barbeque, wok, noodles and rice
  • The Comfort and Favorites: tempura, pancackes, waffles, crepes, halo-halo, pastries, cakes, baked goodies

What I loved best about the Cafe is their use of fresh and authentic ingredients. They cook their food offerings from scratch! Health buffs need not feel out of place! The chefs will willingly cook your request using Gluten-Free pasta or pizza.

Our family truly enjoyed the quick Hyatt City of Dreams Manila getaway. Thank you Hyatt CDO, for inviting us!

Extended: "Wings Tuesdays" at Buffalo Wild Wings Estancia Mall Branch Until October 25!

J.
My mom and I recently went to Capitol Commons' Estancia Mall to get a taste of Buffalo Wild Wings' "Wings Tuesdays." Weekdays couldn’t get any wilder because your favorite Tuesday treats are here to stay… at least for a little while longer.

Buffalo Wild Wings has extended “Wings Tuesdays” so you could have your favourite wings at half the price, every Tuesday until October 25 at its Estancia Mall branch.

I ordered their Ultimate Nachos and got pretty excited by the other food offerings. I got some of the Buffalo Chicken Flatbread, one of the Thin Crust Flatbread variants, and it tasted really good! I'm not a fan of chicken (from the time that I witnessed my dad butchered one in Davao), but I must say it tasted good! And then I got some of their pretzels, part of the Tablegating Sampler, as shown below.

One of which is Lily's by Conlins.
Inspired by nostalgia, Lily’s by Conlins comes in three distinct flavours that brim with warmth and sweetness. The Royal Latte offers a rich heavenly brew that’s tempered with a fresh hint of honey. Sharks in the Philippines

I've never had any personal encounter with sharks. A big fish, yes. It was back in 2009 or 2010 in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, while snorkeling. The huge fish was scary enough, much more a shark. I feared sharks because of the impression I had from the popular movie Jaws (movie theme playing).

But, with the Philippines as one of the countries in Asia with greatest bio-diversity, including sharks, majority of our waters are diverse and wide enough to support the existence of sharks – so much so that they don’t need to attack people.

Having learned this, I came to realize that sharks in the Philippines need to be protected as well. According to Wikipedia, as classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the following are the shark species that are endangered in our country.

1. Oceanic white tip shark
2. Great white shark
3. Sicle fin weasel shark
4. Snaggletooth shark
5. Tawny nurse shark
6. Whale shark
7. Whitefin topeshark
8. Great hammerhead shark

The Thresher Shark, Only in the Philippines

Monad Shoal near Malapascua Island, Daanbantayan remains to be the only place in the Philippines and in the world where scuba divers can see pelagic thresher sharks almost every day.

With this exclusivity, the Thresher Shark can become endangered soon. But, there is a petition for Threshers at Change.org that will help prevent unsustainable fishing of thresher sharks by having the market for their fins monitored and regulated.

To be good stewards of the gifts that we're given is our call and responsibility.

The challenge is to sign the Petition and Vote YES for Threshers at Change.org.  We can't just stand by and watch our environment disintegrate. Let's all take part in supporting the preservation and protection of sharks that have long been butchered and marketed for their fins.

The proposal will help make sure that no more unsustainable fishing of sharks will happen, through monitoring and regulation.

Change is Here for PHILTA

Unknown
Last Tuesday, me and my mom went to the Makati Sports Club to attend Philippine Tennis Summit , an event hosted by the Philippine Tennis Association, also known as PHILTA and and sponsored by Cebuana Lhuillier. Deciding to reform the PHILTA, Randy Villanueva, PHILTA's acting president, organized the Philippine Tennis Summit that gathered local stakeholders of tennis and media to discuss the current state of the association and identified action plans towards PHILTA's improvement.

During the Philippine Tennis Summit on September 6, stakeholders, including tennis coaches, players, parents, sponsors, regional representatives and PhilTA officials, among others, along with members of the media, gathered at the Makati Sports Club where issues on Philippine tennis were brought forth. Villanueva, one of the individuals who leaded the gathering, presented the current state of Philippine tennis, citing the need to improve the country’s standing in international competitions, increase the number of tennis players in the country, and attract them to become members of the national tennis association that represents the International Tennis Federation in the Philippines, among others.

Randy Villanueva speaking for the PHILTA

Villanueva laid down the plans for Philippine Tennis Association, identifying a strategy that starts with changes within the existing organization, followed by achievements that will create funding and resources, enable extensive training programs, and make way for a consistent supply of elite Filipino tennis players before reaching the ultimate goal of becoming an international tennis association.

He elaborated that for him to consider the vision of becoming an international tennis association, the country should have at least two Olympians, at least two players in the top 100 of the ATP & WTA rankings, four junior players in the Top 100 of the ITF boys’ and girls’ categories, qualify for the Fed Cup World Group, and qualify for the Davis Cup World, all by the year 2024. Which is around 8 years from now. I am quite impressed by his notions.

When this project is done, I might consider playing tennis. He stressed that to be able to achieve all of these, there’s a need to augment the current set-up of the current national tennis association to make way for positive changes specifically in making Philippine tennis inclusive to many. This will pave the way for more active memberships from tennis players, increase in pool of talents, and make the association more sustainable in terms of funding. “There’s really a need to amend the organization if we are to become a world-class association. The association right now is being run by just 12 people who do not represent any Philippine tennis stakeholders, region or clubs." I was very surprised by the small number of people running the PHILTA. "I think it’s very important that we make it more inclusive to everyone and encourage more participation from the whole Philippine tennis community,” said Villanueva.

Sir Jean Henri Lhuillier being asked a question

One of those elated to hear Villanueva’s vision for Philippine tennis is sports patron and PhilTA chairman of the board, Jean Henri Lhuillier. “It’s refreshing to have this Philippine Tennis Summit and hear the great plans of Villanueva to move forward Philippine tennis. As always, I’ll be here to support in whatever capacity I can to bring to fruition PhilTA’s plans,” said Lhuillier. During the summit, Villanueva also advised that he initiated the event in an effort to uplift Philippine tennis and clarifies that he does not have any plans to gun for the presidency in the organization’s next election and is just happy to be able to lay down the work for whoever will succeed him.

I entered the event as a representative of my dad, so I'm wearing my dad's name tag. My name is not Jeff, don't worry. As I said awhile back, these changes to PHILTA are making me consider starting to play tennis. For they'll be training kids too, not just adults.

Beeffalo by Hot Rocks: Antipolo City's Steak-cation Destination

Jeff

Beeffalo by Hot Rocks in Antipolo City: Unpretentious. Homey. Flavorful Everyday Comfort Food

Beeffalo by Hot Rocks Antipolo branch
View from the front, right before you enter Beeffalo Antipolo

Beeffalo Antipolo along Manuel L. Quezon Ext.
The great steaks, ribs and wings restaurant, viewed from across the street, on M. L. Quezon Ext.

Your landmark is Antipolo Doctors Hospital. Beeffalo Antipolo is right across it.

Our Family's long history with Beeffalo, formerly, Hot Rocks

Before I go on and write about this favorite steak restaurant of ours, let me just share my family's brief history with them. Back in 2008 (8 years ago), we discovered Hot Rocks, a restaurant owned and managed by husband and wife Louie and Girlie Abad and their partner and good friend Caren Diaz. It was then that I became addicted to their Porterhouse Steak.

With my family, we frequented Hot Rocks inside the Club 650 parking lot (right beside Shopwise), which we learned had a first branch along Ortigas Avenue, fronting Gate 2 of Meralco.

Suddenly, Hot Rocks had to close because of Nuvo City's development. It was as if I had withdrawal symptoms from suddenly not having any Porterhouse Steak. We tried other steaks but nothing was at par with Beeffalo's (Hot Rock's).

Beeffalo's official history: hot-off-the-family-grill

“Beeffalo actually began as Hot Rocks, a restaurant concept that came about because of our love to ‘eat out,’ which in our case, was literally outside of the house,” Louie narrated. “With five kids to feed at a limited budget, we had to do it our way and grill on our backyard to save on costs. Everyone raved about the steaks and the dishes that Girlie would cook. It was so much fun that we would invite our friends who were only too pleased to join us.”
An idea then sparked in Louie’s mind, to open a grill-type of restaurant offering what they had at home and all at affordable prices. That was how Hot Rocks was born in an unassuming, out of the way, hole-in-the-wall location at Autocamp in Pasig City and later in Club 650 in Libis, Quezon City.  The restaurants were a certified hits among people of all ages, including celebrities and politicians who raved about their mouth-watering steaks and Filipino dishes that offered bang for the buck. But when Club 650 closed down in 2012, Hot Rocks grilled their last.
Hello Beeffalo! Louie and his partners ‘resurrected’ Hot Rocks and rebranded and reformatted it until it became Beeffalo by Hot Rocks. Its maiden restaurant was opened in October 2013 along Gil Fernando Avenue in Marikina, far from commercial areas that restaurateurs would normally consider. “ Our location in Marikina was surrounded by unoccupied parcels of land. It was a risky move but something prompted us to do it just the same. And it worked!” Louie enthused. Its success, largely due to the great food at reasonable prices and a homey and unassuming ambiance, led to the opening of a second branch in Antipolo City.

As fate would have it, we rediscovered Hot Rocks, now known as Beeffallo when they opened in Marikina. Since then, the whole family celebrates at Beeffallo on special occasions. Below are IG posts that I and my wife shared during two special days last year.

The new Beeffalo Store in Antipolo City

So, we've really had a long, long history with Beeffalo. That's why when the new Beeffalo store recently opened its doors right at the heart of M.L. Quezon Avenue in Antipolo City, we had to be there.

Fully loaded nachos from Beeffalo Antipolo
For our appetizer, we shared some Fully-loaded Nachos (Php 285). Taco, meat, corn salsa, cheese sauce and cheddar.

It is recommended to start with Beeffalo’s Broccoli Cheese Soup (Php 120). You may also try their Roasted Pumpkin. These two are sure to whet your appetite.

Beeffalo Wings with Blue Cheese Dip (Php 195)

Don't be confused. The sweet dressing is the one with the red, shiny sauce and the hot and spicy is the one without the sauce. People would tend to think it's the other way around - I did.

At Beeffalo, there is an array of other comfort food to choose from. Their equally famous Beeffalo Wings with Blue Cheese Dip can be taken with sweet dressing with the hot and spicy. Either way, you will enjoy wings in their lip-smacking goodness.

What is Beeffalo known for?

If you visit Beeffalo for the first time, don't miss the opportunity to try their Porterhouse Steak! What's with the porterhouse? Well, you've got to learn about steaks and all to maximize the experience. Here's a guide to steaks. Off the bat, you should try it medium-rare or medium if you're not comfortable with too much of the reddish part.

Beeffalo's FAMOUS Porterhouse Steak (250grams is at Php 395, 450grams is at Php 650)

Beeffalo serves steaks that we loved at the former Hot Rocks restaurants in Pasig and Libis. Simply seasoned with salt and pepper, they are grilled the right way that makes all the difference, showcasing the meat’s natural flavor, enough to please even the most discerning steak enthusiasts. Top on the list are the widely popular large-cut Porterhouse and T-bone steaks served with fresh vegetable salad and creamy mashed potatoes made from scratch.

Baby Back Ribs Full Rack from Beeffalo Antipolo
Beeffalo's Baby Back Ribs - Full Rack (Php 765). They also serve Baby Back Ribs Single which is served with Java rice (Php 285).

Beeffalo also stands for the flavorful beef and meat dishes that are their specialties. Peruse the menu and you’ll see the house specialty, Baby Back Ribs. The meat is ‘literally falling apart’ because it is so tender. It is basted with Beeffalo’s signature barbeque sauce, grilled perfectly until that smokey goodness and fall-off-the-bone goodness are achieved. Tasty Java rice completes an order.

Sizzling Beef Ribs in Tamarind Gravy (Php 330)

My new favorite is one of their rice-worthy mains - the special Sizzling Beef Ribs in Tamarind Gravy, the classic Filipino Sinigang cooked and served the Beeffalo way.

Other must-try dishes include the Beeffalo Burger (with slivers of crispy bacon, served with vegetable toppings and fries as sides) and Garlic Shrimp Pasta (creamy linguine topped with garlic shrimps).

A new look for Beeffalo Marikina City – soon!

Louie, Girlie and Caren are happy to share that Beeffalo in Marikina City will soon sport a new look.

“It will be more streamlined and updated while maintaining the charm, the sense of randomness and the vibe that made our restaurant a well-loved one from the moment we opened,” Louie explained. It will still be homey, airy and in Louie’s own words, “planty’. “These add what might be call, ‘magic’ or perhaps ‘allure’ to Beeffalo and we don't want to lose that. But we also would like to improve on some design aspects. There is always room for improvement.” The refurbishment is ongoing and will be revealed sometime soon. Watch out for it.

Brooklyn Dentist Offers You More than a Pretty Smile

J.
When it comes to your teeth, you know you're supposed to take care of them, but you may not understand the full ramifications of a health set of pearly whites. Good oral hygiene and regular visits to a dentist like Dr. Ronald Teichman at Park Slope Dentistry will help you to maintain your teeth, prevent problems, and ensure that you are denture-free in your old age. Your smile will be whiter and brighter with good dental care. However, the benefits go even deeper.

dental equipment

Take Care of Your Teeth to Avoid TMJ and Sleep Apnea
When you have a full set of teeth that are properly aligned, you can stave off more than tooth decay. Serious problems like a TMJ disorder and sleep apnea can stem from the condition of your teeth. When you have gaps due to deteriorated teeth or the surfaces of your teeth have become affected by various conditions, it can affect your bite. When your bite is thrown off balance, your whole jaw can be out of whack. It can result in TMJ, a strain or inflammation of the jaw joint that can wreak havoc on your body. In addition to making your jaw lock up, it can cause chronic migraines, neck pain, earaches, sore throat, and shoulder pain. Sleep apnea is another concern that can be caused by an improper alignment of your teeth, creating an obstacle to your airway when you sleep at night. Committing yourself to regular appointments with your dentist and a dental hygiene regimen can help you to steer clear of these issues and more.

1. Eliminate All Diseases.
One of the reasons that people fail to get healthy is because they have to live with a disease that plagues their mind and body. However, it's important to know that identifying and eliminating diseases is possible. The first step in realizing this goal is figuring out which disease is in operation within your body. The newest product offering that has come off Honda Philippines’ assembly line is its new generation sports motorcycle known as the RS150, which was officially launched in November last year and is currently making its way to Honda dealerships all over the country.

More than its stylish and sporty looks, the RS150 has a major plus factor going for it that no competition can match at this point in time – it is powered by a new generation liquid-cooled, 150-CC, DOHC, six-speed sports engine.

The groundbreaking engine was borne out of Moto GP DNA, officially making it the latest iteration to the world-class racing engine suited for sports motorcycles. The new generation engine of the RS150 also comes with class-leading advance technology, giving its users additional advantages over other sports motorcycles.
